History of Grama Panchayat
Peerumedu developed alongside Kerala’s plantation industry, especially tea cultivation introduced by the British, and its name is linked to the saintly figure “Peeru Bava” and the medicinal “Azhutha” plant found in the region. Plantation workers initially faced severe exploitation, but labour movements and unions gradually improved wages and benefits, while agriculture based on tea, cardamom, coffee, and pepper became the backbone of the local economy.
